Global barbecue under an open sky |
| |
HCM City diners head to an upscale backyard barbeque in an oasis of blue sky and banana trees. Vo Le Hong reports.
Barbecue Garden is an outdoor restaurant of more than 650 square metres. It is located at the a corner of two busy roads in HCM City’s centre, but lies within a beautiful garden surrounded by banana trees. The feeling there is one of peace, away from all the problems of the city. A removable roof that protects guests in case of rain is hidden in a corner of the garden to show the blue sky.
"The food here is OK. The garden is full of nature. I love the beef with cheese. It’s something different, it has a good taste. And the prices are acceptable," said Andrew Savoy, a tourist in a large group of foreigners. "We feel quite relaxed when we’re here," added the person beside him.
The menu includes various Vietnamese and international barbecue dishes. For more discoveries, a large range of meat options (deer, goat, rabbit) and fish (red snapper, salmon) can be barbecued.
Diners can choose between barbecuing their own food on a private barbecue in the centre of the table or asking the chef to prepare everything on the kitchen grill.
Guests will also find special international and Vietnamese appetisers: cheese sticks, cheese and bacon on a small skewer, fried spring rolls, Xi Chuan (China) beef salad and red clam salad.
To finish the dinner, the Thai hot pot is a good idea.
The restaurant has some specialites. For example, the Garden’s couple skewer, which has a beef skewer, squid skewer, fish fillet skewer, vegetables and steamed rice (VND124,000); or the Garden’s couple beef, beef with cheese, beef skewer which includes five spices, beef with lemongrass & chilli, beef with honey, vegetables and steamed rice (VND119).
We chose "Combo 6 – Garden’s Couple Mixed", for VND109,000. It comes with a variety of the restaurant’s specialties (Beef with cheese, fish fillet, Prawn with salt & chilli, squid with salt & chilli, vegetables and steamed rice).
Beef with cheese has always been BBQ Garden’s standout dish. Diners take one piece of finely sliced raw beef wrapped around a small piece of cheese and grill it, according to his or her taste for rare or well-cooked meat.
With BBQ combos, you will have more choices. After enjoying beef you can change to fish, shrimp and squid. Each offers you a unique flavour.
Chewing slowly, you will recognise the diversified flavour between meat and seafood. Especially when you have them with grilled okra and eggplant.
You can also enjoy Paella, which is a fried rice dish from Spain. Rice is mixed with coconut milk and sea food like shrimp and cuttle-fish, as well as sausage and chicken. This mixture offers an amazing experience.
Note that these dishes are cooked without fat, so your dinner will be flavourful and healthy at the same time.
If you do not like beer or wine, BBQ garden also offers pure, fresh tropical juices full of colours.
Tropical Garden
fresh pineapple, mango, passion and orange – VND29,000
Under the Sun fresh strawberry, passion, watermelon and pineapple – VND29,000
Garden’s Smoothie fresh banana, strawberry, orange and honey – VND29,000
"Good recipes start, of course, by using the best ingredients. We choose all our ingredients carefully. For example, we use only the tenderest part of the beef the fillet." BBQ Garden’s chef said. "All our Barbecue dishes are marinated in our exclusive sauce, a recipe with a delicate mix of Asian and Western flavours."
If you go in the morning, the garden is nice and fresh. There is often a lady who sits alone at the same time having breakfast, where she reads newspapers in the restaurant’s library corner.
"I come here for breakfast one or two times per week. My colleagues and I usually also come here for lunch," Thuy Nguyen said. Although her office is not very close, she likes the atmosphere.
"It is always wonderful to have breakfast here," she said. "Open-air... very fresh! Food is very good and the price is affordable." — VNS

COME TO STAY |
| |
I was wandering along Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street on Year’s End in a chilly weather which is quite seldom in this land known to be hot all year. Such a unusual coldness made pedestrians crave for something warm. Not knowing what to do and where to go, Barbecue Garden came to sight.
Located right in the center of district 1, Barbecue Garden is located in a deep green decorated with sparking lanterns which made me immediately feel warm. Settling down at a small table in the corner, an elegant waitress gently laid a menu in my hand with grilled dishes of Vietnam and Western Europe cooked with distinct recipes. The dishes are both old and new: spring rolls, Tu Xuyen beef salad, oyster salad, cheese rolls, grilled beef with cheese, grilled fish fillet, grilled squid and grilled deer. I decided to have cheese rolls for starters.
After the starters, Thai minestrone came in a small pot. Its spicy taste is perfect for those in love with Thai food. Then I continued to enjoy the entrée which was grilled beef and was surprised it is endowed with five great tastes.
Different from other restaurants I had been to, the food here is delicious but not too rich, and therefore not ruining my appetite. The staff explained that the cooks did not use animal fat to marinate and grill food for the sake of customers’ health and food’s quality is always guaranteed.
In the gentle melodies of classic songs, whispers of fellow diners sitting around the stove where fragrant smoke puffs come from, I felt the coziness of a family reunion despite being alone here. Having enjoyed a delicious dinner, I indulged myself with French-style chocolate cakes for dessert. The bittersweet taste of fresh chocolate followed me all the way home: now I regret for not being here earlier.
I also learned that in the morning, I could also enjoy breakfast with three diffident styles: Vietnamese, Western or French.
For those who simply wish to drink a cup of tea, coffee at the same time enjoy ice cream and surf the internet with free wifi or read newspaper at the corner of the restaurant library or chat with friends, Barbecue Garden is the prefect choice.

BARBECUE GARDEN - COMBINATION OF NATURE AND APPETITE |
| |
Although Barbecue Garden was opened a month ago, the staff?s enthusiasm, delicious food plus green large nature space ? are enough for the name Barbecue Garden to assert its trademark. Thanks to the combination in style of a restaurant and a cafe, we will not be surprised at why the restaurant has a garden style.
The blazing red aprons of service people, a corner with all kinds of books and newspaper or the airy large garden style plus its unique cuisine have increased its excellence and left a deep impression in guests. The name Barbecue Garden reminds us of grilled dishes like grilled wild boar, goat breast, deer? The restaurant?s ?specialty? is beef rolled with cheese; bacon rolled with salmon or cheese and more special is spring roll.
Nonetheless, there are many other delicious rice dishes such as lotus rice, Yang Zhou fried rice or Paella miscellaneous rice originated from Spain, very new and unique, a mixture of oyster, shrimp, sausage, chicken? which create a new taste despite of its common ingredients.
Barbecue Garden also serve grilled dishes for children with diversified ingredients including a string of beef scented in barbecue sauce, combined with chili, onion, tomatoes, potatoes? That look delicious and beautiful.

BARBECUE GARDEN |
| |
Recently opened on the corner of Le Thanh Ton and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia, Barbecue Garden is one of the few restaurants-cum cafes in town providing a bona fide al fresco atmosphere.
A French-Vietnamese collaboration, the restaurant is set in an open leafy patio with marquee-style canvas roofing. The focus here is on everything barbecued, and although the menu contains a number of international-style dishes, the emphasis is on Vietnamese cuisine.
All of the attractive tiled tables sport a built-in gas fired barbecue in the centre, and like its sister restaurant Quan Nuong above the Temple Club, customers have the choice of either barbecuing dishes on table or having everything pre-grilled in the kitchen.
Topping the eye-catching menu are the barbecue combos (VND194,000 to VND219,000 fro three to four people). Focusing on a mixture of marinated meat, fish, vegetables and sea food, these combos are perfected for large groups. Smaller combos fro two people (VND99,000 to VND115,000) are also available.
A la carte choices are also on offer including wild boar, venison, goat, rabbit, beef and a number of seafood options. Free Wi-Fi and a range espresso-based coffees, shake and smoothies, make this a good place to come and escape the trials and tribulations of city life.

BIRTHDAY PARTY IN BARBECUE GARDEN |
| |
While I was looking for a restaurant for my birthday party, I was introduced the restaurant by a friend and I decided to come with 10 friends. The green out-door space and the nice atmosphere were the first things that attracted me and my friends. I ordered: beef, deer, goat, rabbit, shrimp ...which were marinated, simply decorated but attractive. We started grilling, a waiter in black t-shirt, red apron appeared with a birthday cake, candle sparkling .... music was turned on, everybody said happy birthday to me.
I was very happy and surprised. After the party, I knew that my friends had asked the restaurant a help to make me such a happy birthday.
We had more for the dinner: hot pot, rice in lotus leaf which were very "Barbecue Garden". My friends tried chocolate cake, crepe to see how the French dessert is. Wow really delicious ! I had put this restaurant into my favorite restaurant list. By Phuong Tran on internet dining review 6/9/2007

My friend and I were in the photo shop to print some pictures and discovered the restaurant.
The out-door atmosphere, the French music (I'm not French) attracted me, but for me the best is the food. I ordered a combo including beef, fish, shrimp, squid, and grilled them on a "barbecue plate". My fiend played again with beef with honey, and deer with five spices. Really delicious!
Red lamps had been turned on. We ordered 2 Vietnamese coffees as we still had one hour more before going to our Vietnamese class in evening. [05 Nov 2007 22:33:54] By Hae Soo internet dining guide review
